Week 4 and 5TD Theme – How we organize ourselves Central Idea – Communities function because of the systems within them. Key Concepts – Function, Change, Connection Students brainstormed in groups to identify the various systems in their school and classroom, they then used the 6 thinking hats strategy to organize their thinking and review/ improve upon those systems. They watched a video to understand different in a hospital. They then enacted a role play based on a hospital setting, which helped them appreciate how the systems integrate towards the ultimate goal of providing healthcare to those that need it. Going further students chose any two organizations (Hotel/Bank/Hospital) and explored the terms and roles associated with it. They used a Venn - diagram to show common systems between the organizations, and their unique systems. To strengthen their presentation skills, students presented their research work about various National systems on PPT. In English, students enjoyed reading the novel ‘Oliver Twist’ and identified different types of sentences: imperative, interrogative, declarative and exclamatory. They also learned various command terms and converted various sentences into commands. Adding to their understanding of central idea, the PE teachers discussed the working of different sports organizations at different levels: IOC, FIFA and other national and international federations. They also learnt about various systems in a music studio in their music class. Students identified the keywords related to computer systems in integration with their ongoing unit on Systems. They also learnt how to create QR codes. Adding to their understanding of central idea, students did creative art work on Pointillism. Few students started to work on landscape and creative composition and side by side they also learned clay modelling to understand dimensions and composition of art. They revised number system and attempted summative Assessment. Students also learned the concept of ‘Average’. They practiced calculating the average from their real life scenarios. Students identified the vocabulary related to addition and multiplication and the relationship between the two operations. In Spanish, students learnt the vocabulary related to Family. They made a family tree. The Unit of Inquiry was integrated with Spanish as students learnt the vocabulary on different departments in our school. In French, students found out the interesting facts about France using their research skills in ICT lab. They also learned to look for a key word and circled it in a list of questions on their worksheets. They learnt different types of greetings for various occasions and times of the day and discussed the cultural differences between France and India and how it affects the types of greetings we use. They also practiced the pronunciation with each other. In Dance, the students learned more complex workouts like arabesque, different variations of abdomen crunches and modern techniques of movements. The dance routine taught is a complete combination of contemporary and jazz. It has elements like attitude turns, leg swishes and axel turns.
