The focus this week was on Mathematics where the students reviewed the formulae for calculating area and perimeter of square, rectangle and triangle and also applied their knowledge of decimal notation to this concept. They identified different types of angles and constructed as well as measured them with the help of a protractor. They also enjoyed drawing graphs and interpreted data from the pie charts. Students involved in the Math activities Hindi - Students revised grammar concepts of Hindi Manak Vartni and they made sentences out of it. Spanish – In their Spanish lessons students recapitulated "AR and ER" ending verbs. They conjugated these verbs and used them to complete sentences. In their French classes students have revised the conjugations of 'er' ending verbs. They enjoyed playing online games based on conjugations of verbs. ICT - Students revised their understanding of computer fundamentals and internet basics through Kahoot quizzes. During the art lessons students practiced clay modelling to create murals. In their dance classes students reflected on the PYP exhibition along with the basic flexibility and core workouts. They also danced on a freestyle track. The students of grade 5 enjoyed their transition day to prepare for moving on to MYP with a lot of enthusiasm and celebrated this special day with joy. During their Mathematics lessons, the students took a summative assessment on decimals. They were then tuned in to percentages – they were given a stick figure of a human and asked to divide it into 3 parts – head, torso, lower part. They had to then estimate what part of the body did each part represent in percentage. Through this activity, they understood that one whole is 100%. Students learnt to convert fractions to percentages and practised this in class. Students explored real life examples to calculate percentages of a given quantity – and hopefully should now be able to calculate discounts when they go shopping! e.g. 40% off on Nike shoes. Students also created posters (using information from newspapers and magazines) to express their understanding of where they find percentage (%) in their real life. For their English lessons, the students defined nouns and identified singular and plural nouns. They were able to distinguish between different types of nouns like possessive nouns, collective nouns, proper nouns and their usage. They read a chapter from the book Oliver Twist and applied the knowledge of nouns to list different types of nouns given in the chapter. In their Hindi ab initio classes, the students practiced reading aloud sentences and sorting of 'kriyaa’(verb ) and 'sangyaa' ( noun ) from the same. They also enjoyed solving 'paheliyaan' (riddles) and created riddles of their own, enhancing their language skills. During the Spanish lessons students learnt the verb ‘Tener’ and its uses and they also took a formative assessment on the same verb. In French class, students were introduced to types of interrogative words such as why, what, how, where and when. They extended their learning by framing short and simple phrases by using the interrogative words. In their Art classes students have completed the unit on human figure drawing and proportions. They are currently working on ways in which human figures can become parts of larger compositions. In ICT classes students completed their final animation on machines using Pivot Animator. Students learned "Keharwa Taal" of Tabla in music classes. The children practiced forehand and backhand shot in Badminton. They also played a rally match with their respective partners. In dance classes, the basics of salsa and jazz was emphasised .The students worked on isolating hip movements along with the correct attitude and posture. Apart from academics, students were briefed about the NDTV Behtar India campaign which is aimed at creating a nationwide movement to encourage school children to spread awareness on three major aspects i.e health, hygiene and environment to make India a better place. The girls of grade 5 also attended a session to address the issues of puberty that aimed to make them aware of the various changes they might be experiencing. In UOI, we enhanced our thinking skills by brainstorming about types of forces we experience around us. We researched about the properties of each force in groups and shared it with our peers. We began to delve into the second line of inquiry “Transformation of energy by machines”. By observing the bicycle that was kept in our class for a day, we explored the simple machines, types of forces and forms of energy involved in it. We understood the transformation of muscular to kinetic energy in a bicycle. We learned about the wastage of energy in various machines through real-life examples. We completed our Formative Assessment on the 2nd line of inquiry. We have actively started preparing for our PYP exhibition by creating logos. In ICT, we worked on our machine designs in Pivot Animator. We showcased the working of our machines through an animated sequence. During our English classes, we listened to a poem by Allan Ahlberg-“Please Mrs.Butler” and recited the same. We read a poem on machines by Rudyard Kipling. Through these poems, we appreciated the various elements like lines, stanza, rhyming patterns, mood and poetic devices like personification and alliteration. We read some more chapters of Oliver Twist and discussed the setting and character analysis. We were given an opportunity to change the conclusion for a chapter. In Math, we learned strategies for multiplying and dividing decimal numbers. We practiced word problems to appreciate the real-life application of this concept. We were introduced to rounding-off in decimals. During Hindi lessons, we learned ‘visheshan’ and its types. We discussed the use of ‘visheshan’ in our vocabulary and did a word activity based on it. During Hindi Ab-initio classes, we practiced loud reading to develop our oral skills. We learned and practiced vocabulary using the maatraa ‘ref’. We were introduced to the concept of ‘sangyaa’ through a picture reading exercise. We wrote the letters ‘dhha’, ‘Va’, ‘da’ and practiced the related vocabulary. We learned to conjugate ‘er’ ending and irregular verbs in present tense in French. We enjoyed participating in beat boxing championship. In Spanish, we learned the verb ‘Tener’. We also saw its use with different expressions. We wrote a role play by applying our knowledge of the three important verbs like ‘Ser, Ester and Tener’. For the Art classes, we almost completed the human figure drawing and proportions. Currently, we are working on the ways in which human figures can be a part of larger compositions. During our Dance lessons, we have started with basics of Salsa which includes the correction of posture and hip movements. We also recalled the basics of Jazz. In Music, we learned the song “everything at once” and explored about instrument’s family. We practiced forehand and backhand shot in Badminton during our P.E classes. TD THEME – How the world works Central Idea – Machines transform energy and can make our lives simpler. Key Concepts – Form, Function, Change After learning about internet security, students tuned in to the new unit through discussion about the rescue of a bear, fallen into a construction pit. They watched a video of polar bear rescue mission and discussed the machines that were involved in rescuing the bear. Students also made a mind map and derived their own definition of a machine. They researched about the six simple machines, their features and uses. They represented their findings through posters on simple machines. In English classes, students learned to write the newspaper articles. They read the news-paper articles and identified the elements of newspaper article. Students used their thinking skills and wrote headlines for untitled articles. MYP 3 students taught grade 5 the skill of article writing. The students really enjoyed the activity. They understood the elements of an article of an article and wrote headlines of few articles. To observe International Mother Language Day, they researched about the different languages spoken across India and presented their research. In Maths classes, students recapped mixed operations on fractions and attempted summative assessment. Students attempted formative assessment on fraction through a Bingo game. Students recapped the place value system for whole numbers and then introduced to decimal place value system up to thousandth place. Students plotted decimal numbers on a decimal grid paper to understand tenths and hundredths place. In Hindi classes, classes, Students had Summative Assessments on the basis of unseen passages and letter writing. They had practice on the grammar concepts upsarg and pratyaya. In their Hindi Ab initio classes, the students were introduced to the concept of 'viraam chihn (punctuations)'. They practiced the same through different texts and oral exercises. Loud reading was practiced for correction of pronunciation and stress on punctuation. They have been introduced to the concept of using half letters in Hindi words by reading aloud of text with many such words. In Art classes, we have completed drawing of individual parts of the human body. Presently we have started joining the units to make a full human figure. We are trying to create proportions by technical measurements.
In Spanish classes, we learnt the conjugation and the use of two verbs with the same meaning (SER and ESTAR) we took a formative assessment on the same. In ICT classes, students showcased their presentations which they created on ‘Evolution of Computers’. They used Padlet to collate the information they researched and the created presentations in groups. In Music classes, Students played instruments (recorder,Melodica,Guitar&Keyboard) and learned song "Ek tu hi bharosa". P.E. – Children continued with Cricket Unit in their PHE classes. They revised rules of cricket and practised skills involved in batting, bowling and fielding. They also played intra class short sided match. We created a list of different tools and applications that are used as a means of communication. In groups, we researched about the advantages and disadvantages of apps like WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, email, blogs etc. We worked on a chosen mode of communication technology and tried to persuade our peers to use the same. We were divided into two groups for debating the pros and cons of using technology. We watched a video to understand the nuances and etiquette of debating. For English language development, we worked on our social skills by giving a constructive feedback on the persuasive essays written by our peers. We read samples of persuasive essays which helped us to draft our own essays by using various elements of persuasive writing. As an integration with UOI, we wrote our first draft of the persuasive speech on ‘Technology is a boon in today's life’. We enjoyed debating as part of persuasive speech and are excited to refine our debating skills further. During ICT lessons, we revised the apps like iMovie, pages and keynotes on iPad. We are in the process of completing a presentation on the evolution of computers using the padlet and Powerpoint. Spanish lessons saw us revise the verb ‘SER’ and learn the uses of the verb ‘ESTAR’ by expressing our emotions. We also created a few emoticons. In French, we learnt to express our emotions by using different adjectives. We enjoyed participating in an activity wherein we enacted an emotion and our team member had to guess that emotion. For Math, we recapped the concept of addition and subtraction of fractions. We reinforced the concept of multiplication of a fraction and solved various word problems to understand the use of fractions in our daily lives.
We wrote an informal letter to a neighbour as a part of our Vernacular Formative Assessment, convincing him not to cut tree as they are a vital part of our environment. We discussed letter writing and article writing processes, during our Hindi lessons. For P.E, we revised the rules of cricket and practiced few skills like batting, bowling and fielding. We played an intra-class match too. During Art classes, we continue draw different parts of a human figure. We are trying to understand which geometric shapes can be used represent the human form. We have learned to connect geometric shapes through linear lines to create semi-realistic human figure drawings. We revised our school song and learned the song ‘Ek tu hi bharosa’ during Music lessons. We brainstormed about the elements of a blog and wrote our class blog together. We researched about the features of different communication apps like WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, skype and email. We got an opportunity to attend an interactive guest lecture on a widely used communication app, ‘Twitter’ by the Southeast Asia head of Twitter, Mr. Arvinder Gujral. As a part of our unit, we attended a cyber-safety workshop by Mr.Rakshit Tandon, who is the cyber-security expert for India and other countries. We became acquainted with an interesting website named ‘Padlet.com’ during ICT class, as a part of our unit. Padlet is a virtual wall on which we shared our views about cyber-crime. In English we learned how to plan and write essays. We analysed elements of an essay. We learnt how to write the introductory statement by applying HIT, which means hooking statement, introductory statement and thesis statement. We wrote essays on topics like ‘impact of internet on societies’, ‘should children be allowed to use cellphones?’ and ’computers today’. We also practiced writing the conclusion of an essay. In Mathematics, we were comparing unlike fractions. We were introduced to improper fractions and their conversion to mixed numbers. We ordered fractions in ascending and descending order and plotted them on a number line. We are now practicing to solve real life word problems. During Hindi classes, we learnt to type Hindi letters (Devnagiri) using the font “Susha”. We first typed our names and then progressed to writing sentences and paragraphs. We were given homework to write about Republic Day in ‘Susha’. We also used the font to write about ourselves, our pet, our teacher or our friend. Hindi Ab initio: We learned the concept of informal and formal letter writing. We also read the story “Phoota Ghara”. We then comprehended nouns, pronouns, adjectives and verbs from the story “Mera Sapna”. We practiced the sounds 'Jjhh' and 'Cchh' by speaking and writing vocabulary using the same. We got to know different types of emotions during French lessons. We learned how to pronounce the adjectives. We have enjoyed drawing different emotions in our process journal. In Spanish, we revised the conjugation of the verb "ESTAR" and learned its uses. We learned how to use this verb to talk about locations. We played a ball game in the class where we revised adjectives in Spanish. We also saw how to use the same verb with emotions and we learnt some words related to emotions and feelings in Spanish. In Music class, we played instruments (recorder, Melodica, Guitar and Keyboard) and learned the song "Ek tu hi bharosa". During Art class, we have started ‘Stippling Art’. We are in the process of understanding the different techniques of Stippling Art. We are also learning the difference between colour stippling art and mono colour stippling art. They were tuned into their new unit ‘Communication Technology’ through an activity wherein the students recreated the drawing only through the verbal instructions given by their partner. The objective behind the activity was to understand the importance of communication and the difficulties faced . Further, they brainstormed on the evolution of communication technology and presented through a mind map. Students also discussed the different forms of technology and segregated them under three different headings: audio, audio-visual and text. They also researched on the companies which provide us with services such as emails, social media and communication apps. In Hindi, students discussed the different types of communication and changes in medium of communication. They also watched and listened to the poem 'Ek maa kee bebasi' by Rajesh Joshi. They also answered the questions based on the poem. They read the science fiction story ‘ve di bhi kya din the' and discussed the same with their peers. In ICT, students used tagul.com to create a word cloud on communication in 21st century. They identified the advantages and disadvantages of expressing themselves using technology. In English, students were assessed for their prior knowledge of prefixes and suffixes which was followed by a class discussion. Going further, they did loud reading of the novel ‘Oliver Twist’ and identified affixes and compound words. They also read an essay and identified the elements of an essay. Students got an opportunity to meet Deepak Dalal, the author of 'Talon the Falcon' and 'A Flamingo in My Garden In Math, students made a fact sheet on fractions as a part of their prior knowledge assessment. They learnt identifying and creating equivalent fractions. Further, they learnt to convert mixed numbers into improper fractions and vice versa. They also learnt to compare and order unlike fractions.
In Hindi Ab initio, students shared their experiences of activities done and trips undertaken during their winter break. The classes were very interactive wherein the students asked each other a variety of questions related to each other's experiences enhancing their verbal as well as comprehension skills.They revisited the concept of 'vilom shabd' by speaking and writing words along with self-drawn images for better understanding. The same was reinforced through a sentence making activity. In Spanish, students revised the verb ‘SER’ with its uses and learnt a new verb ‘ESTAR’. Students further gained knowledge by differentiating between the two verbs. In French, students learnt the conjugation of 'avoir' verb (to have). They played online games based on the conjugation of the verb such as match making and concentration. They also learnt the pronunciation of the verb through songs. The focus was laid on the core work outs in the Dance lessons. Students had a discussion on different effects of technology on dance. They also learnt the choreography on old school hip-hop. The students practiced batting and bowling skills in Cricket . They also played inter class short sided matches. TD THEME – Who we are CENTRAL IDEA – Recognizing similarities and differences between beliefs enables people to be global citizens. KEY CONCEPTS – Form, Connection and Responsibility The last week witnessed some parents enter the learning environment of their wards and take on the role of educators. The parents spoke about Judaism, Buddhism and Jainism. They spoke to the children about the religions they practise, their faith and beliefs. One of our teachers shared her beliefs in Islam with our students. It was heartening to watch the children appreciate the discussion and recognize the commonalities in all the religions. Students created informative leaflets to present their research about religion. They also researched about the fasting festivals and presented their research through ppt. Students also analysed about the reasons some of the wars fought in the name of religion. The lessons we learn from history enable us to build a better and peaceful world. Students continued to practice word problems about HCF and LCM. Some students taught various ways of calculating LCM and HCF to their peers. Students made Kahoot quiz about factors and multiples. In ICT, students enhanced their knowledge of computer fundamentals in their ICT classes, they learnt about the terms related to computer hardware, software and internet. In Hindi classes, Students discussed ‘Dohe’ by Kabeer and wrote their views inournals.They also discussed the story 'eedgaah' by Premchand and attempted an oral comprehension based on the same. In Hindi Ab initio classes, the students revisited and and practiced the grammar concepts learnt till date like 'sangya' (nouns) and 'sarvnaam' (pronouns) and language concepts like 'ling badlo' (genders) and 'vilom shabd' (opposites) by compiling oral sentences and picking out words from given sentences. They were introduced to the new grammar concept 'sarvnaam' (adjectives). Reading aloud was practiced through sentence reading. Students watched a video on "La navidad en España" and learnt how do Spanish people celebrate Christmas and New year. They also made a list of new vocabulary. In their French classes students read out the description of their partner and practiced pronunciation of difficult words. They also revised the previously done concepts with a Kahoot Quiz. Students continued to play percussion instruments in groups in their music lesson. (Bongo, Djembe, Tambourine & Cajon) Students are continuing with Mandala art form. Mandala Art is based on design patterns which are related to cultures and religions. Students are currently doing modern Mandala Art which is based on textile design. They are creating different forms related to Mandala Art using poster colours. In PE, students practised flat races and shuttle races and also played intra class shuttle relay match. Key Concepts – Form, Connection and Responsibility While pursuing their inquiry into the current unit, students were a part of a group activity wherein they sorted the symbols of different religions. They also had a classroom discussion about the significance of symbols in different religions. They described the religious artefacts with their peers during a 'Take and Talk' activity. They shared its appearance and its importance to the world, family and self. They also researched on the features of the major world religions and shared their research with the class. In English, students appeared for their Summative Assessment on biography. Then they were tuned into 'Similes and Metaphors' through an activity where they had to match the animals with the adjectives describing them. Further, they wrote their own similes based on colour, texture, sounds and size. For their formative assessment, students wrote a paragraph using similes. They also created a Venn-diagram stating the similarities and differences between similes and metaphors. To demonstrate their understanding of metaphors, students created their own charts depicting the different elements of metaphors. In Math, students were tuned into the concept of 'Factors and Multiples' through a group activity in which they were given certain number of counters which can be arranged either in one way or more than one way. They also created a number line to understand that factors are smaller than the number and multiples are greater than the number. Further, they learnt to compute the LCM of given pair of numbers in different ways. They also attempted a quiz about Factors and Multiples. In Hindi, students watched the video based on the famous story of Premchand 'eedgaah' followed by a classroom discussion. They also attempted comprehension based on the same. Hindi Ab-initio In Hindi Ab initio classes, the students practiced their listening and comprehension skills by watching the story video 'Bandar aur Magarmachh'. They took this forward by sequencing the story through pictures and then worked on their expression and writing skills by re-telling the story in their own words. The students practiced the concept of 'ekvachan-bahuvachan' (singular-plural) through words as well as sentence making. This was integrated with their learning of the grammar concept 'sarvnaam' and they learnt conversion of 'sarvnaam shabd' into plural form. The same was practiced through oral as well as written sentence making. Students enjoyed playing percussion instruments in their music lesson. (Bongo, Djembe, Tambourine & Cajon) They also watched video about the music in different religions. In ICT, students created a mind map using ‘Bubbl.us’ They are also learning to create a quiz using ‘Kahoot’.
Students gained knowledge on the different professions and nationalities in Spanish. They practiced the use of verb "SER-To be". In French, students discussed how to write about their partner in third person. They made a list of questions they will ask their partner and explored the ways in which they can compile the answers to write a description. They were also given the feedback on their presentations. In Art, students continued to work on Mandala style of Art which is based on design patterns which are related to cultures and religions. They are doing modern Mandala Art which is based on textile design. They are learning to create different forms related to Mandala Art through the medium of poster colours. In PE, students practiced how to serve with forehand and backhand in badminton. They also practiced smashing with power and control further the students played short set matches with each other. In their Dance classes students concentrated on improving the core muscles in order to make them flexible and strong. They practiced hip hop style of dance and stunts. |
