TD THEME - Where we are in place and time Central Idea - Explorations can lead to discoveries, opportunities, challenges and new understandings. Key Concepts – Form, Function and Reflection Assessments, summatives! Exams! What do they bring to mind? Pen and paper, nerves, tension, stress... At DPSI, it’s none of these. Our students design games to display their understanding. Students of grade 5 designed a Snakes and Ladder game as part of their summative assessment for the recently completed unit on systems. The ladders reflected when systems worked well and the snakes reflected how things slowed down when a system doesn’t work well. The students worked with enthusiasm and confidence while displaying their creativity and designed the game using their thinking skills. We have now embarked on a new journey of discoveries and explorations. Using the visible thinking strategy of I see, I think, I wonder, students tuned into their new unit and observed three images relevant to explorations and later penned down their thoughts. Going further, students researched about the authors who have written about travel/ exploration and discovery. They found out facts related to the author and presented them in a chronological order. In English, students had a ‘Poetry Party’ in which they shared their favourite poems with each other. They also practiced shape poetry on the topic of their choice. Further, the students read and discussed the poem ‘Cargoes by John Masefield.’ They researched about the things they read in the poem and collected information for their presentation on lino board/ padlet. Students also completed a formative assessment on Instructional writing. In Math students discussed strategies to solve word problems. Using the think-pair-share activity students brainstormed and narrowed strategies they can use while solving a problem. As a class we then came up with a model set of instructions. We will continue working on these strategies and look at some more. In Hindi, Students learnt about ‘anekarthi shabd’ and did sentence making with those words. They also gained knowledge on hindi ordinal numbers and how to use them in sentences. They were introduced to formal letter writing. Students had an engaging sentence making activity wherein they learnt about ‘upsarg’ (prefix) and how it can create a new meaningful word.
In Hindi Ab Initio, Group B students practiced writing short sentences. They inquired about nouns and learnt to recognize the same from the given text. They practiced the sounds 'Jjhh' and 'Cchh' by speaking and writing vocabulary using the same. Practice exercise was done for reading out loud through a story passage and through the same they were introduced to the opposites. They also attempted a spelling assessment and a listening assessment. Group A students learnt to speak, read and write the letters 'Va' and 'Da' and also discussed and wrote vocabulary using these letters. They were also introduced to the maatraas 'Aa', 'i' and 'ee' and practiced these by speaking, reading and writing words using the same. They also attempted a spelling assessment and a listening assessment. In French, students learnt to use the appropriate articles to define the gender of the classroom objects. They added new objects to their existing vocabulary list. In Spanish, students revised the vocabulary on family. They learnt a verb "SER - TO BE" and made sentences in first person. They also had fun while playing hangman using the Spanish words learnt so far. In ICT, students finalized and presented their Power Point presentation on Computer Systems.
